My daughter, Hailey and I enjoyed our day exploring the great Alaskan outdoors, scouting locations for future photo shoots. One location in particular caught our attention as it was fairly easy to get to, which I like since I am a bit out of shape right now, and I am slightly obsessed with glaciers. Haha!
What we look for when scoping locations:
- Ease – how easy will it be to get to by foot?
- Safety – how safe will it be for everyone?
- Backdrop – what will we incorporate behind our clients?
We found Byron Glacier, 48 miles south of Anchorage, near Portage Lake. WOW is all I can say about this place!
- Ease – how easy will it be to get to by foot?
- It was about a 1.5 mile hike and took about 25 min. to walk on a very slight incline.
- Safety – how safe will it be for everyone?
- It seemed safe enough for everyone. We walked the trail and crossed a rocky stream to get to the location. We kept a cautious eye out for wildlife and had to watch our footing once on the glacier.
- Backdrop – what will we incorporate behind our clients?
- With Byron Glacier we would incorporate the beautiful blue glacier colors. There were plenty of trees as well. We found many great locations to shoot there. The possibilities are endless at this location.
We will be returning there to shoot again soon. One tip is to watch the weather and bring plenty of rain gear. It can get very rainy and windy in that area. We got drenched, as it rained the entire time we were there, even in December!
